If the current global 'climate crisis' has made one thing clear, it is that the environment is a social issue characterized by political conflict. The current era is now referred to as the 'Anthropocene' because human technologies are now operating at such a scale that they are completely transforming the whole planet's environment. How humans live and how they relate to and think about the environment and technology will determine the future of all species on earth. This subject explores different ways of thinking about the relationship between technology, society and the environment. It explores how we can build more liveable cities, more equitable communities, more environmentally sustainable ways of living, and new ways of relating to non-human forms of life. Topics covered include: concepts of nature and progress, global waste streams and recycling, gender politics and technological change, the past and future of car technology, the automation of inequality, animal ethics, and health and wellbeing in the Anthropocene.
